Stats
I started wearing a smart watch. I bought it because I wanted to be able to track my workouts and my sleep and my everyday stats. I've been wondering if this is a good thing.
At a meal with friends last week they were discussing an app called Strava which is basically social media but using the results of recent workouts as posts. We joked how in a way this was quite douchey and show-off behavior. How people have also lost the ability to just got for a run or for a ride, and are obsessed with the stats.
It seems like the future of health will be having continuously monitoring and AI to predict disease and give personal recommendations. And I want to be a part of that, even if I still have some uneasiness with sharing my biological data. So why not start earlier?
It seems too that we have lost out ability to sense our bodies and rely on devices to do it for us (I assume that prehistoric man was more attuned to their heartrate and when something was amiss than we are today). I wonder if these devices bring us back into our body or keep tracking externalized and outsourced, losing even more ability to be in touch with our bodies.
What happens when it tells me I had a good sleep even though I am exhausted, or that I didn't give me all in a run even if I broke a new record.
I'm excited to find out.
