Calories
I went out with a friend yesterday who said he's been very into counting calories. The obvious reason was that he wanted to lose weight. But despite this being the context that most people use the word 'calorie' it is actually a unit of energy.
I sense that very few of us think about how we use energy, and that the point of food is to replace and store energy. Paul Rosolie (I know I've mentioned him a bunch, it's just a phase) as he describes eating monkeys and other creatures, explains how in the jungle you are using thousands of calories to stay alive, and you'll each pretty much anything to replace those. I've heard a tech CEO thinking about new projects and features in calories required.
I sit and pinch my large belly and think about the fat stored within it. How much energy I need to use to deplete it's storehouses.
It's interesting too because the more energy you store the more energy it takes to move that storage. The system is built to bring you so some perfect equilibrium.
I wonder why I store so much energy. Is it really beacuse I eat too much? Metabolize too slow? Some other genetic factor? I wonder if I'll ever have a body with low % energy storage.
